You’ve likely had the experience of going out to eat at a Chinese restaurant and, at the end of the meal, cracking open a fortune cookie. We pass around the tiny slips of paper and read them out loud. Sometimes the words feel oddly encouraging. Other times they’re vague enough that they could mean just about anything. Well, what if I told you that sometimes, without even realizing it, we approach the Bible in a similar way. We crack it open, place a finger on a verse, or scroll through inspirational quotes online, hoping for a quick word from God. Verses meant to be part of a larger story get lifted out of context and turned into promises of prosperity, success or certainty. In Fortune Cookie Theology, we’ll take a closer look at some of the most familiar and frequently quoted verses in Scripture. Together, we’ll return them to their original setting and listen for what they actually say about faith, hope, and God’s presence in real life. This series is about discovering a deeper, more trustworthy faith that is definitely more satisfying than a fortune cookie.
